Amboyna burl comes from Pterocarpus indicus, and it has been considered one of the most desirable burls in knife making and fine woodworking for well over a century. What sets it apart is the swirling figure — tight clusters of tiny knots rippling through warm reddish-brown and gold, with no two pieces reading the same way. It is dense, heavy, and takes a polish beautifully, which is why it turns up so often on high-end custom knives and pens.
Sold dry, not stabilised. That keeps the natural character of the wood fully intact. If the knife is destined for daily carry and you want extra moisture resistance, stabilising the scales yourself — or having them stabilised — before mounting is worth considering.
