XLarge Blade Blanks and Machetes
Large blade profiles for clearing, chopping and camp work. Machetes, big bushcraft blades and large chopping profiles, ground and heat treated in the same process as the rest of our range.
What large blades need
Geometry matters more here than on a small knife. A long blade flexes, and a thin one wanders in a cut. These profiles are ground thicker through the spine, with the weight distribution that makes a chopping stroke land properly.
Hardness is set for toughness rather than maximum edge retention. A machete that chips on a hidden knot is worse than one that dulls slowly, and a rolled edge on a big blade comes back with a few passes on a file in the field.
Steel and handles
Most large profiles are in N690 at 58-60 HRC, which balances toughness and corrosion resistance well for outdoor use. Handle material should be chosen for impact: micarta or G10 rather than a figured wood that will crack under shock. See handle materials.
