Knife Scales, Stabilized Wood and Handle Blocks
Matched knife scales and solid blocks, cut oversize so you have room to shape. Stabilized wood that does not move with humidity, natural hardwood, and micarta and G10 knife scales.
Scales or blocks
Scales come as two matched pieces that sandwich a full tang. Standard thickness runs 8 to 12 mm — two 10 mm scales on a 4 mm tang gives a handle around 24 mm across before shaping, comfortable for most hands. Go thinner for a slim kitchen knife, thicker if you want a pronounced palm swell.
Blocks are solid pieces for hidden tang construction, where the tang passes through a drilled handle rather than sitting between two scales.
Choosing a material
Stabilised wood gives you real grain without the movement — the resin impregnation stops it swelling and shrinking with humidity, which matters on a knife that gets washed. Natural hardwood is more beautiful and less stable; dense tropical species like rosewood behave better than most. Micarta is the easiest to work and grips best when wet. G10 is the toughest and fully waterproof.
Always buy oversized. Sanding excess away is easy; adding material back is not possible.
