DRY Turkish Walnut Wood Block - C grain
Turkish walnut is what European gunmakers reach for when a stock has to be both strong and worth looking at, and it earns the same place on a knife. It is dense enough to take a pin without splitting, light enough not to unbalance a blade, and the figure runs deep rather than sitting on the surface.
Ours is air dried, not kiln forced. Kiln drying is faster but it stresses the fibres and the piece can move again once it is thinned into a handle. Air dried walnut is stable when you get it and stable a year later.
C grain is clean, straight walnut with light figure. Warm brown, even colour, no defects. If you are building a working knife or learning the process, this is the grade to use.
Thick enough to cut at least two scales from. Saw it down the middle and you have a bookmatched pair with wood left over, or leave it whole and shape a hidden tang handle from the solid.
Finishes beautifully with oil — a few coats of tung or danish brings the chatoyance up and the grain appears to shift as the knife moves in the hand.
