Outdoor knives fail differently from kitchen knives. A chef knife dies slowly, losing its edge over months. An outdoor knife chips on a hidden staple, snaps when it gets used as a pry bar, or rusts because it went back into a wet sheath.
So the priorities invert. Toughness comes first, then corrosion resistance, then edge retention — and how easy the steel is to sharpen matters more than in the kitchen, because you may be doing it in the field with whatever you carried in.
Why buy your blanks from us
We buy Böhler and Uddeholm steel directly from Voestalpine, laser cut and hand grind every blade in our own workshop, and then send the ground blades back to Voestalpine for heat treatment — hardened by the mill that made the steel, in industrial vacuum furnaces, to the exact cycle the alloy was designed for. On an outdoor knife that matters more than anywhere else: a blade that chips or bends in the field is almost always a heat treat problem, not a steel problem. Every blank ships sharpened and honed, with free laser engraving on request.
1.4116 — underrated for hard-use knives
Run at 54–57 HRC.
Good outdoors: tough, fully stainless, and sharpenable on a rock if it comes to that. Low hardness means it deforms rather than chips, which is often the failure mode you want — a rolled edge can be steeled back, a chipped edge cannot.
The trade-off: it dulls faster than N690 or AEB-L, so you will sharpen more often. But in the field that trade is not as one-sided as it looks. 1.4116 comes back on almost any abrasive in a couple of minutes, while a powder steel needs diamond and time you may not want to spend at camp. A steel you can actually restore where you are beats a steel that holds longer and then leaves you stuck.
Choose it if: you are building a beater, a first bushcraft knife, or a knife for someone who will use it hard and maintain it casually.
N690 — the outdoor default
Good outdoors: the same balance that makes it a good kitchen steel makes it a good field steel. Strong corrosion resistance for wet conditions and blood, solid edge retention for a day of processing game, and it sharpens without special abrasives.
The trade-off: not the toughest here, and not the longest-lasting edge. Middle of the pack in both, which is exactly why it works.
Choose it if: you want one steel for hunting, camping and general outdoor use that will not let anyone down.
Sleipner — the toughness pick
Good outdoors: this is where Sleipner belongs. High toughness and high wear resistance make it excellent for blades that chop, baton and take impact — camp knives, choppers, large bushcraft blades, hatchets. It holds an edge through work that would chip a harder, more brittle steel.
The trade-off: semi-stainless. It will patina, and it will spot if stored wet. In the field this is mostly cosmetic and many makers like the patina, but it needs oiling and drying.
Choose it if: the blade will be batoned, chopped with, or generally abused. For a large outdoor knife this is our first recommendation.
Elmax — long edge life for hunting
Powder metallurgy stainless, run at 60–61 HRC.
Good outdoors: excellent wear resistance means you can process several animals without stopping to sharpen — the single most useful property for a hunting knife. Corrosion resistance is good enough for wet field conditions.
The trade-off: less tough than Sleipner, so it is a poor choice for chopping or prying. And you are not sharpening it at camp without diamond abrasives.
Choose it if: you are building a hunting or skinning knife where the job is sustained slicing, not impact.
M390 — maximum edge life in a stainless
Powder metallurgy stainless, run at 60–61 HRC. Very high chromium and vanadium content.
Good outdoors: the longest edge life of any stainless we carry, combined with strong corrosion resistance. For a knife that has to keep cutting through a long day without maintenance, this is the benchmark.
The trade-off: the same carbides that give it that edge life make it demanding to sharpen — diamond abrasives only, and it takes time. It is also less tough than Sleipner, so keep it away from chopping and prying.
Choose it if: you want a premium EDC or hunting blade where the owner sharpens rarely and has the stones to do it properly.
Vanadis 4 Extra — toughness at high hardness
Uddeholm powder metallurgy tool steel, run at 63–64 HRC — the hardest steel we offer.
Good outdoors: this is the one that breaks the usual trade-off. Most steels get brittle as hardness climbs; Vanadis 4E stays remarkably tough at 63–64 HRC thanks to its powder structure and vanadium carbides. That combination gives you a very hard, very wear-resistant edge that still tolerates real work.
The trade-off: it is a tool steel, not stainless — it needs oiling and drying like Sleipner does. And at this hardness, sharpening is a serious job.
Choose it if: you want the highest performing outdoor edge we can supply and the owner understands maintenance. For a bushcraft or hard-use knife in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, it is hard to beat.
A word on powder steels and cryogenic treatment
Elmax, Vanax, M390 and Vanadis 4 Extra are all powder metallurgy steels, and they share a requirement: they need a cryogenic step in the heat treat cycle to perform as intended. Without it, retained austenite stays in the structure and you lose both hardness and dimensional stability — the blade tests soft, or moves later.
This is not something a workshop oven and a bucket of dry ice reliably delivers. It is one of the main reasons our ground blades go back to Voestalpine for hardening: the mill that produced the powder runs the full cycle, cryo included, to its own specification.
Vanax — for salt and wet
Good outdoors: unmatched corrosion resistance. Saltwater fishing, coastal use, dive knives, humid climates, a blade that lives in a sheath and gets put away damp — Vanax handles conditions that would pit any conventional stainless.
The trade-off: expensive, and demanding to sharpen.
Choose it if: the environment is genuinely corrosive. In a dry climate you are paying for a property you will not use.
AEB-L — the light-duty specialist
Good outdoors: tough for a stainless and takes a very keen edge, which makes it excellent for smaller outdoor knives where slicing matters — caping knives, small hunters, light EDC folders.
The trade-off: edge retention will not carry a long day of hard work.
Choose it if: the knife is small, the cuts are fine, and you value sharpness over interval.
For EDC specifically
An everyday carry knife spends most of its life in a pocket doing light work — boxes, cordage, food, tape. Corrosion resistance matters because it sits against your body, and sharpening ease matters because you will do it at your own bench.
N690 is the sensible default. M390 or Elmax if you want to sharpen rarely. Vanax if you sweat heavily or live somewhere humid. AEB-L if you want the cleanest slicer. 1.4116 if you would rather touch the edge up in a minute than wait months between sharpenings. Toughness rarely decides an EDC knife, so the outdoor ranking does not apply directly.

And the same caveat as always: geometry and heat treatment decide more than the alloy does. A thick, badly hardened blade in a premium steel will lose to a well-made blade in a simple one.
