Buying a Heat Treated Blank vs Making Your Own: An Honest Comparison

An honest comparison, from someone who sells one of them

We sell heat treated blade blanks. That gives us an obvious interest in one answer to this question, so let us be direct about where each option genuinely wins.

Making a blade from scratch is a real craft worth learning. Buying a finished blank is the right choice for most people most of the time. Both statements are true.

What making a blade from scratch involves

Starting from bar stock, the steps are: profiling, drilling, grinding the bevels, heat treating, tempering, and finishing. Heat treatment is the step that separates a knife from a piece of shaped metal.

To do it properly you need a way to reach and hold precise temperatures, a quench medium matched to the alloy, and a tempering oven. For simple carbon steels a forge and oil quench will get you there. For the stainless and powder steels — N690, Elmax, M390 — you need a controlled atmosphere and a specified gas quench rate, which in practice means industrial equipment.

The learning curve is real. Warped blades, cracked blades, blades that come out too soft, blades that look right and chip on first use. Every maker has a box of them.

What starting from a blank involves

The blade arrives profiled, ground, hardened and sharpened. You add a handle: prepare the scales, drill, glue, shape, sand, finish.

A first build takes a weekend, most of which is epoxy curing. The tools are a drill, a rasp or file, sandpaper and clamps.

Where making from scratch genuinely wins

Complete design freedom. Your own profile, your own grind geometry, your own distal taper. If the knife in your head does not exist, this is the only way to make it.

The craft itself. Some people want to make knives, not assemble them. That is a legitimate goal and a blank does not serve it.

Damascus and pattern welding. Not available any other way.

Steel cost at volume. Bar stock is cheaper per knife than finished blanks, once you own the equipment and can heat treat reliably. That "once" carries a lot of weight.

Where a blank genuinely wins

Access to steels you cannot heat treat at home. This is the big one. M390, Elmax, Vanax and Vanadis 4 Extra need vacuum furnaces and cryogenic treatment. Ours are heat treated at Voestalpine — the mill that made the steel — in industrial vacuum furnaces, with a cryogenic step for the powder steels. That is not reproducible in a workshop at any reasonable cost.

Consistency. Every blade in a batch comes back at the same hardness, documented. Which is why we can publish a number: N690 at 58–60 HRC, AEB-L at 60, Vanadis 4 Extra at 63–64.

Time. A weekend versus months of learning before your first usable knife.

Cost of entry. A forge, an anvil, quench tanks, a belt grinder and a tempering oven versus a drill and sandpaper.

No failure rate. A blank that arrives hardened stays hardened. Nothing warps at the last step.

What a knife kit is, and is not

A kit bundles a blade, scales and pins together. Convenient, and usually more expensive than buying the parts separately — and the bundled handle material is whatever the kit maker chose.

Buying separately means picking a blade in the steel you want and scales in the material you want. The blade and the handle ship together anyway.

An honest recommendation

Start with a blank if: this is your first knife, you want a finished knife rather than a hobby, you want a premium steel, or you have limited space and no forge.

Learn to forge if: the making is the point, you want profiles nobody sells, or you plan to build enough knives that equipment pays for itself.

Do both if: you want to learn the craft but also want good knives in your kitchen while you are learning. Most makers we talk to started with blanks and kept using them for the steels they cannot heat treat.

There is no purity test here. A knife you finished yourself is a knife you made, whoever ground the bevel.
