You do not need a forge to make a knife
Most people who want to make their first knife stop at the same place: the forge. Coal, propane, an anvil, quench tanks, a tempering oven, and the years of practice it takes to heat treat steel without ruining it. It is a real craft, and it is also a wall.
There is another route. Start with a blade that is already cut, already ground, already heat treated and already sharpened, and spend your time on the part that makes the knife yours — the handle, the fit, the finish. That is what a heat treated blade blank is for.
This guide walks through the whole process, from choosing a blank to the finished knife in your hand. No forge, no heat treating oven, no metallurgy degree.
What a heat treated blade blank actually is
A blade blank is a finished blade without a handle. Ours arrive laser cut from Voestalpine steel, hand ground on belt grinders using our own jigs, vacuum heat treated, sharpened to a 400 grit edge, and drilled for handle pins.
What that means in practice: the hard part is done. The geometry is set, the hardness is locked in, the edge is already cutting. What is left is woodwork, epoxy and sanding.
Every blank we ship is already sharpened. You are not buying a piece of steel that needs an edge put on it — you are buying a blade that will cut you if you are careless with it. Handle it accordingly from the moment it comes out of the box.
Step 1 — Choose the blade
Two decisions matter here: the profile and the steel.
Profile is about what the knife will do. A gyuto or santoku for the kitchen. A scandi grind for bushcraft and carving. A drop point for hunting and general use. A machete profile for clearing. The profile is fixed — you cannot reshape a hardened blade with hand tools, and you should not try.
Steel is about edge retention, corrosion resistance and how easy the knife is to sharpen later. A few honest guidelines:
- 1.4116 at 54–57 HRC is forgiving, easy to sharpen, corrosion resistant and inexpensive. A good first knife.
- N690 at 58–60 HRC is the all-rounder — stainless, tough, holds an edge well, still sharpenable on ordinary stones.
- AEB-L at 60 HRC takes an exceptionally fine edge. A favourite for kitchen knives.
- Sleipner at 60–62 HRC trades a little corrosion resistance for wear resistance.
- Elmax, M390 and Vanax at 60–61 HRC are powder metallurgical steels — long edge retention, excellent corrosion resistance, harder to sharpen.
- Vanadis 4 Extra at 63–64 HRC is the hardest blade we offer. Outstanding edge holding, demands proper sharpening equipment.
If this is your first build, do not start with the most expensive steel. Start with something forgiving and spend the money on handle material you actually like looking at.
Step 2 — Choose the handle material
Handle scales are two matched pieces of material that sandwich the tang. The main families:
- Stabilised wood — natural figure, resin impregnated so it does not move with humidity. The best of both worlds for a kitchen knife.
- Natural hardwood — walnut, olive, rosewood, padauk. Beautiful, needs an oil finish and a little care.
- Micarta — linen or canvas in resin. Nearly indestructible, grippy when wet, sands to a warm satin.
- G10 — fibreglass in resin. The toughest option, fully waterproof, the usual choice for hard use knives.
For a first build, micarta is the easiest to work with. It sands predictably, does not chip, and hides small mistakes.
Step 3 — Prepare the scales
Cut each scale slightly oversized — a few millimetres proud of the tang on every edge. You will sand the excess away later, and having material to remove is much easier than not having enough.
Now flatten the inside faces. This is the step beginners skip and regret. The face that meets the tang must be dead flat, or the handle will have gaps you cannot fill. Lay sandpaper on a piece of glass or a granite tile, and sand each scale flat with 120 grit until the surface is uniformly scratched with no shiny low spots.
Sand the front edge of each scale before you glue anything. Once the scales are bonded to the tang, the front edge — the one against the blade — is almost impossible to finish cleanly. Take it to your final grit now, and put your oil or wax on it if you are using one.
Step 4 — Drill the pin holes
Clamp one scale to the tang in exactly the position you want it. Use the holes already in the tang as your drill guide and drill through the scale. Do not eyeball it and drill separately — the holes will not line up.
Drill the first hole, put a pin through it to lock the alignment, then drill the second. Repeat for the other scale. Take it slow with a drill press if you have one; wood and micarta both like to grab and split at the exit.
Step 5 — Glue up
Use a two part epoxy with a working time of at least 30 minutes. Five minute epoxy sounds convenient and is not — you will still be aligning the second scale when it starts to set.
Rough up the tang with 80 grit and clean it with acetone or alcohol. Epoxy grips a scratched, oil free surface far better than a polished one.
Mix thoroughly. Under-mixed epoxy stays soft forever. Butter both the tang and the inside of each scale, insert the pins, clamp with even pressure, and wipe the squeeze-out before it cures — cured epoxy on a finished scale is a real problem.
Tape the blade before you start. Masking tape over the edge protects both the blade and your hands for the rest of the build.
Let it cure fully. Whatever the packet says, give it a day.
Step 6 — Shape the handle
This is where the knife becomes yours.
Start by taking the scales down flush with the tang. A belt sander makes short work of it, a rasp and files will get you there with more sweat and more control.
Then round the profile. Work the corners off, check the shape in your hand constantly, and remember that a handle that looks symmetrical is not necessarily a handle that feels good. Your grip is the judge, not your eye.
Keep the blade cool. If you are using a power sander, dip the blade in water regularly. Heat travelling into the edge from the tang can soften the temper — the one way you can still ruin a properly heat treated blade at this stage.
Step 7 — Finish sanding
Work up through the grits: 120, 180, 240, 400, then 600 if you want a fine finish. Do not skip grits. Each one removes the scratches of the last, and a skipped grit shows up as deep marks under the final polish.
Between grits, wipe the handle with a damp cloth and let it dry. This raises the grain on wood so the next grit cuts it off, instead of leaving it to rise later when the knife gets wet in use.
Step 8 — Seal the handle
Micarta and G10 need nothing — sand them to the finish you like and stop.
Natural wood needs sealing. For a kitchen knife, use a food safe finish: pure tung oil, a food grade mineral oil and beeswax blend, or a hardening oil sold specifically for cutting boards and kitchen tools. Apply thin coats, wipe off the excess, let each coat dry properly. Three thin coats beat one thick one every time.
Stabilised wood is already resin impregnated and needs only a light wax if you want extra sheen.
Step 9 — Check the edge
Your blank came sharpened at 400 grit. After the build it may need a touch-up — handling, taping and sanding dust all take a little off.
A few passes on a fine stone or a leather strop is usually all it takes. You are maintaining an existing edge, not creating one, so keep the angle consistent and go light.
How long does it take
A first build takes most people a weekend, spread across two days because of epoxy cure time. Realistically: an evening to prepare and glue up, a day of curing, and a few hours of shaping, sanding and finishing.
The second knife takes half as long. By the fifth you will be thinking about handle shapes rather than worrying about steps.
The tools you actually need
Minimum viable set: a drill, a file or rasp, sandpaper in a range of grits, two part epoxy, clamps, masking tape and a flat surface.
Nice to have: a belt sander (saves hours), a drill press (better hole alignment), a vice.
Not needed: a forge, an anvil, a quench tank, a heat treating oven, a hardness tester, or a metallurgy background. That is the entire point.

Pick a profile you will actually use. Pick a forgiving steel. Pick handle material you like. Everything else is patience.
